Midsummer

The Midsummer festival (Johannefest) is celebrated in a special way here. The handmade midsummer pole is raised by strong men by hand. Anyone who wants can help decorate the pole. During the spring, the women have tied tassels for the crowns and the men have painted/repaired anything that broke. On Midsummer’s Eve, many people dress up in national costumes; refreshments and a lottery are usually held in the village pavilion. Several poles are raised in Eckerö and all around Åland.
